Workplace Training Program
Human Services
Workplace Training is a program element under the Training for Work program. The purpose of Workplace Training is to:
- provide employer-delivered, work-site training opportunities to unemployed and marginally employed individuals who are having difficulty entering the workforce due to a lack of skills.
- provide work exposure opportunities at a worksite for individuals with limited or no work experience.
The intent of Workplace Training is to provide individual-focused training and/or work exposure to enable individuals to find and maintain employment. The training and/or work exposure needs of an individual are assessed and an appropriate employer with a position that fits with the individual’s Service Plan trains the individual at the work site. The individual becomes an employee of the employer from the start of the Workplace Training placement. Alberta Employment and Immigration (AE&I) provides a contribution towards the employer’s training-on-the-job costs for the duration of the contract. The contribution portion for the work exposure component is negotiated with the employer.
The objectives of Workplace Training are:
- to enable unemployed and marginally employed individuals to acquire employability skills, essential skills and occupation-related skills required in the local labour market.
- to assist unemployed and marginally employed individuals to obtain viable employment that provides increased income and work related benefits
Eligible Individuals Specific to Workplace Training
Workplace Training is appropriate for individuals experiencing barriers to obtaining and maintaining employment. Those barriers may include a lack of essential skills, work exposure, or occupation-related skills.
Individuals in Workplace Training must be 18 years old, out of high school, have an employment goal and may have one or more of the following characteristics:
- have been unsuccessful in finding and maintaining employment
- have limited or no experience in competitive employment
- lack the minimum qualifications that employers require
- have sufficient literacy/numeracy skills and physical/mental health to participate in and benefit from training to maintain employment
Note
Participants in Workplace Training are not required to be out of school for 12 months prior to the training start date.
For more information on individual eligibility, see Eligible Individuals – General.
Through the Disability Related Employment Supports assessment, AE&I may assist employers with worksite modification, vehicle modification, on-the-job coaching, and supportive services for people with disabilities.
Furthermore, apprenticeship training opportunities can be explored in Workplace Training when the skills and abilities of the individual are insufficient to meet the entry-level requirements of the trades. Work exposure may be the first step in determining if an individual has the aptitude required for work in a trade. When this occurs, AE&I staff/service providers will provide information about the Workplace Training position to their local Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training office. Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training can then follow up with the employer to ensure that the employee is registered as an apprentice when appropriate.
