In 1982 the Edmonton Research Park (ERP) was established specifically to attract technology-intensive operations to the City of Edmonton. The Park is the focal point for much of the advanced technology activity in the region and is an ideal site for both new and established companies with a strong research and development component. The Park is also home to the Edmonton - Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) and Research Centre One (RC1); facilities designed to support new and early-stage advanced technology enterprise.

Summary

The Edmonton Research Park, home to the Alberta Research Council and a number of Edmonton's high-tech companies, is located within a fifteen minute drive of the University of Alberta, the International Airport, and downtown Edmonton. A variety of government-industry-university collaborations support the impressive network of R&D based businesses located in the Park. The University of Alberta, Canada's third largest university, serves an important role in spawning many of the new companies established in the Park.

Companies in the Park represent a wide cross section of industries from biotechnology, to specialty materials design & manufacturing, software development, electronics, specialized testing, oilsands research, and more. A new initiative for the development of biotechnology businesses in the Edmonton Research Park is the "biotechnology lease program (BLP)". Under the BLP, qualified businesses can lease land for $1.00 per year for up to 10 years with an option to purchase the land at the market value at the time the lease was signed.
