Advanced Education and Technology

AERI promotes energy research and innovation in strategic areas including oil and gas, heavy oil and oil sands, clean coal, electricity, renewable and alternative energy. It promotes consortia and builds networks by integrating knowledge, skills and investment potential of industry players, federal and provincial governments, research providers and universities.

The Alberta Energy Research Institute supports its mandate through the following three programs:

A. Industry Research Program: Open to application from any company, or corporation or organization conducting research related to the AERI mandate and strategic priorities of the Alberta Energy Innovation Plan and/or Alberta's Climate Change Action Plan.

B. Innovation Assistance Program: Open to application from inventors in Alberta looking to bring their ideas to the marketplace but who do not have ready access to normal commercialization channels

C. University Research Program: Currently open only to application from researchers in Alberta universities, conducting research related to the AERI mandate and strategic priorities.

AERI does not fund capital projects, non-technical research or business operating costs.

The Alberta Energy Research Institute supports its mandate through the following three programs:

A. Industry Research Program: Supports all types of energy and environment-related projects, from fundamental research to technology commercialization, that have technical merit and fit with AERI's priority areas. Applications are received throughout the year and evaluated using 11 criteria shown at http://www.aeri.ab.ca/sec/fun_opp/docs/irp/form.doc, including technology opportunity, competitive analysis, funding leverage and economic and environmental benefits to Alberta.

B. Innovations Assistance Program: Supports early stage inventions that will contribute to the technology or practices of Alberta’s energy industry. Intended to help small inventors to develop and test ideas before they are brought to the marketplace. Applications are received throughout the year. It provides grants to a maximum of $50,000.

C. University Research Program: This program supports energy and environmental research in support of its mandate at universities. Applications are solicited during an annual competition. The program is in transition towards strategic projects that would integrate into the six Innovation programs of the Energy Innovation Network (EnergyINet).
